On October 20, my parents and I attended a sunset rooftop soiree at the Sky Garden atop the Hyundai building in Irvine, CA. The event was hosted by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and gave supporters the chance to come together and hear about the progress made in the research of Hans Dooms, PhD.
The JDRF has given Dr. Dooms a $500,000 research grant for his study of memory T cells and the role they play in type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. He walked us through the research he has performed on non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice-- I made every effort to follow his slides while he spoke, but I must admit, I have some research of my own to do. I'm new to all of this and his level of expertise went beyond my understanding. However, I can say that by the end of the night, I felt encouraged that the JDRF is making great strides towards a cure. I feel confident that Dr. Dooms will dedicate his time and efforts looking for ways to target these cells for therapy.
It was an enjoyable night where we mingled with JDRF supporters over wine and hors d'oeuvres. I feel honored to be part of such a wonderful group of people, dedicated to finding a cure.
