Tune In... I'm on the Radio

www.thesoundla.com
Last week, I received an e-mail from the associate executive director of my chapter's Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She was writing to inquire as to if I would be interested in accompanying her to Los Angeles for a radio interview. I am more than happy to help out in any way that I can, so I hit reply and let her know that I would most definitely be there.

We were scheduled to interview with Mike Powers of KWSD 100.3 The Sound at 12:30 pm on October 29th. Donna would touch on the JDRF's research, the upcoming walk, and diabetes awareness month. For my part, I would be speaking about the symptoms of diabetes, my diagnosis as a young adult, and what it means to my life now.

On Friday, we set out for Los Angeles. We left around 11 am and were successful in escaping the horrific afternoon traffic. However, we got lost immediately upon exiting the freeway. Thanks, Mapquest. I think our friendship is up for reevaluation. Fortunately for us, we quickly retraced our steps and found our way to Wilshire Boulevard in record time. We arrived at the studio, received our badges, and rode the elevator up to the nineteenth floor. We were warmly greeted by the receptionist and took a seat while we waited for the deejay to usher us back.

Mike Powers welcomed the two of us and escorted us into the recording studio. We each took a seat adjacent to the three microphones and chatted about how the interview would play out. And then Mike counted down-- 3, 2, 1... on air. Mike rattled off questions like the professional deejay that he is, covering all of the bases. He made us feel comfortable, like we were talking to an old friend. In fact, I think there were times that we forgot the microphones were still recording! Ha The interview took no more than twenty minutes and we were on our way.

The following Sunday morning, my mom and I sat in her chilly car waiting for the broadcast to air. Overall, I think it went pretty well. I'm giddy that I got to partake in an interview on a radio station that I have programmed into my own car!

KWSD The Sound gave us a great podium to get the word out on the research the JDRF has done, as well as how devastating a disease diabetes can be. I'm thankful that I've had the opportunity to be a voice for everyone affected by this disease.

If you missed our interview on air, you can listen to the broadcast here. Enjoy!
