Walk to Cure Diabetes

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes took place Sunday, November 7, at the University of California, Irvine.

This go around, I walked with the Dream Guild Dream Girls. We partnered with Saks Fifth Avenue and they were kind enough to create team shirts for all of us to wear.

It was a gorgeous, crisp Fall morning where families and friends rallied together to celebrate their fundraising towards a cure. The grounds were packed with more than 5,000 walkers in attendance-- what a success! Music blared over the speakers, the kid's corner was roaring with laughter, and various booths were littered with informational packets. I spent some time perusing the stands and for those of you that live in the Southern California area, here are a few gems:
  • Bye Bye Sugar Bakery serves tasty sugar-free pastries, cakes, and pies. I tried the coconut macaroons and I'm sold!
  • Clemmy's Ice Cream is all natural and sugar-free! Oh my! They sell half-a-dozen flavors along with some novelty items. I munched on a snack sized Ice Cream Os and loved it. Another bonus? During the month of November, Clemmy's is donating five cents of every pint to the JDRF. Every little bit helps!
I was encouraged to see the support within our community and the hope held by the children and adults. The final sum of funds raised has yet to be determined, but it is estimated that the morning brought in $750,000!
