On October 21st, the Dream Guild of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation hosted designerTadashi Shoji at a VIP champagne breakfast.
Tadashi is known for his attention to detail and red carpet gowns, both of which have led him to have quite the celebrity following to include big names such as Emmy Rossum, Kate Walsh, and Deborah Messing. His most recent collection was inspired by aerial views of nature, rendered in various textures and mixed materials.
The week prior, I was asked to be a Dream Girl model for the event. I was informed that Tadashi himself would use my picture and measurements to hand-pick dresses specifically for me. Sigh. Isn't this a dream for all fashion lovers? I waited in anticipation to see what designs had been chosen for me.
I arrived early the morning of the event. I was chatting with some of the ladies when Tadashi appeared at my side. He is incredibly down to earth and has a wonderful sense of humor. He talked with us about his travels and his line-- smiling and laughing the entire time. Then, we were ushered into the fitting rooms where an array of gowns awaited us.
I entered my fitting room and found three beautiful dresses. He pulled a red one-shoulder fitted dress with a flower on the shoulder, a simple yet elegant black dress, and a black one-shoulder mesh, lace, and sequin dress. I chose the latter based on the intricate details within the layers of fabric. A black cuff completed the ensemble and I was "runway ready". The ladies and I changed back into our brunch attire and walked out to greet our family and friends.
We made our way to the tables where we were seated and served a delicious brunch catered by Creme De La Creme. Attendees munched on mini quiches, fruit cups, and bread. After brunch concluded and introductions were made, the Dream Guild models made our way to the fitting rooms to change. We walked the miniature runway, greeted by flashing bulbs and smiling faces. We took group pictures with the designer and then left him to greet the many others in attendance.
My favorite moments of the morning came when I was modeling. After walking the miniature runway, his assistant grabbed me and pushed me through the crowd, telling me to keep smiling. Turns out a sensor was left on my backside and I was quickly ushered onto a countertop where the sales associates feverishly worked on detaching it. Once I hopped off the counter, I noticed the other ladies were doing their final walk. I scurried in my five-inch heels to join them and made it just in time for the picture. Afterward, I asked Tadashi for another picture and he quickly went about adjusting my dress before we posed. Too funny.
The morning concluded with the rare opportunity for attendees to be styled by Tadashi Shoji and as an added bonus, everyone who purchased an item received a signed sketch. It was a fabulous way to end the Bloomingdales Love Where You Live shopping event!
