hosted a workshop titled, "Enjoying the Holidays". As the name suggests, this class is designed to teach young adults how to manage their diabetes through the holiday season.
I decided to attend in hopes of discovering a free pass of sorts for my Thanksgiving dinner. Ha! I kid! I kid!... But wouldn't that be nice?! In all actuality, I was looking to glean as much information as possible to enjoy the holidays without a hitch. I don't plan on eating in excess, but I would like to partake in family traditions that I have enjoyed up until this point.
The workshop was extremely beneficial for me. The staff went out of their way to cover every aspect of the holiday season to include: food, alcohol consumption, illnesses, exercise, and travel. Within the two hour time-frame, I gained the knowledge necessary to enjoy the holidays sans hospital visits (fingers crossed).
Without further ado, this holiday season I plan to...
- Indulge in holiday meals within moderation
- Be sneaky, sneaky by modifying recipes to be healthier
- Enjoy that glass of merlot on a full stomach
- Fly the friendly skies with my doctor's note in hand, extra supplies, an emergency kit, and a list of traveling resources should something go awry
- Stay healthy! I'd really like to think of the best case scenario, but if I do get sick, I will try my best to fight those highs, check my ketones/BG, hydrate, and eat. Note that I said try...
- Run those miles like my life depends on it
- Relish my time spent with family and friends
In all actuality, not much has changed in the way of this holiday season. Like everyone, I need to be diligent when it comes to my health. That picture just looks a little different now.
