I followed up my visit to the endocrinologist with a trip to get my second set of labs completed.
As you can see below, my cholesterol is slightly elevated from my previous tests.
Cholesterol: 264 mg/dl, with normal being < 200
HDL: 71, with normal being > 40
LDL: 170, with normal being < 130
Cholesterol/HDL ratio: 3.7, with normal being < 4.4
LDL/HDL ratio: 2.4, with normal being 0.5-3.0
Triglycerides: 114, with normal being < 150
I was feeling a little concerned about these results because I do not want to be placed on Lipitor at such a young age. However, my doctor explained to me that while anything above 200 is less than desirable, I have a great HDL that places my cholesterol ratios within the normal limits. I hadn't heard of the cholesterol ratios before these tests were performed and I am happy to hear that it is not a concern at this point in time. I am continuing to learn new facts through tests like these and I will maintain my efforts in lowering these numbers.
HgbA1C: 5.9%
Whoo-hoo! I could've been knocked over with a feather by this test result. I assumed that my A1C would be through the roof with the time that I've spent sick with erratic levels over these past couple of months. However, my doctor noted that while it may look like a healthy number, it is partially the result of hypoglycemic episodes, which are a huge danger to my health. My goal here is to work on maintaining steady levels that do not fluctuate between the extreme highs and lows.
The final tests performed were the GAD-65 and anti pancreatic islet cells tests. The results show that I do in fact have type 1 diabetes (surprise!). My body is still in the honeymoon stage and it is in the process of attacking and killing the remaining beta cells. I'm hoping that things will be more even keel once this process is completed.
