Friday morning, Tamara and I made a run to the grocery store. We kept with our Big Daddy routine: we throw on a pair of sunglasses and instantaneously become invisible (this makes us feel a little better about going out in public with second day hair and make-up). I snagged a nonfat misto at the Starbucks inside of Albertsons, slowly feeling my energy return (I am hardly a morning person).
We weaved through the aisles and began to collect diabetic friendly foods. I seem to operate on the, you-told-me-I-can't-so-now-I-want-to mantra and I swear I could smell every pastry they prepared in the bakery. It wasn't going to happen. My sister grabbed orange juice (just in case my levels dropped), sugar-free chocolate for a treat, and tons of vegetables. Tamara and my brother-in-law, Chris, planned all of our meals around my new dietary needs and did everything they could to go above and beyond accommodating me while I was there.
When we got home, I jumped back on the internet and decided it was time to begin fighting this disease with a vengeance. There are 24 million diabetics in the United States alone. I am convinced that if we stand up for this cause, we can bring awareness, resulting in funds for research, and hopefully one day a cure. I signed up for every kind of advocacy I could find, including Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. My sister and I picked a walk close to home and created a team, immediately sharing it with our family and friends.
The quick response and support that I received was overwhelming. I am incredibly grateful for the people in my life who have chosen to support, pray, and stand behind me. I will fight this and it helps to know that I'm not doing it alone.
Artist: Rascal Flatts
Song: Stand
[Chorus:]
Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend, till you break
Cause its all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand
